FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to common questions about Folio.
General
What is Folio?
A home for sheet music on iPad and iPhone: a library that keeps your scores organised, a reader that gets out of the way when you play, and a way for two devices to read as one.
Which devices does it run on?
Folio is coming first to iPad and iPhone. An iPad is the best stand; an iPhone is the one you always have with you.
Is Folio free to use?
Yes, with a limited number of scores — the app shows you how many. Every feature is included. Folio Pro removes the limit and switches backup on, for a single purchase.
Library & files
What can Folio open?
PDF, MusicXML — plain or compressed .mxl — and MIDI. A PDF is shown as it was made. MusicXML and MIDI have no pages of their own, so Folio engraves them into pages meant to be read from a stand.
How do I import PDF scores?
Any way a file reaches an iPad: the share sheet from Mail, Files or Safari; “Open in Folio”; the Import button in the library; or from iCloud or Google Drive once connected.
How do I organize my library?
Pin what you are working on, tag scores however you think about them, and gather them into collections — a recital programme, a term of lessons. Search finds a score by title, composer or tag.
Does importing the same file twice count twice?
No. Folio recognises music it already holds and files it once, whatever it was named on the way in.
Purchase & billing
What is Folio Pro?
The one thing Folio sells: an unlimited library, with backup switched on. Everything else is in the free app already.
Is it a subscription?
No. One purchase, bought once, kept forever. It belongs to your Apple Account and follows you to a new device.
How do I restore my purchase?
Sign in with the Apple Account that bought it — Folio restores by itself on launch. If it has not, open Settings and tap Restore Purchases. More on restoring.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are Apple's to give, through reportaproblem.apple.com. If something went wrong, tell me too.
Sync & backup
Does Folio need an internet connection?
No. Reading, marking, bookmarks and page turns are all local. A connection is needed only to reach a cloud you chose to connect.
Does Folio support iCloud sync?
Yes. Keep your library in Folio's own iCloud container and it appears on your other devices. It stays in your Apple Account; nobody else can see it.
What about Google Drive?
Also yes. Folio asks Google for one narrow permission — access to files it created or you picked — and nothing else. The privacy policy says exactly what that means.
Is my music stored in the cloud?
Only if you put it there, and only in your iCloud or Google Drive. Folio has no server of its own.
Devices
Can two devices show the same score?
Yes. Connect two devices and one follows the other, so a duo turns pages once. It works directly between the devices over the local network or Bluetooth.
Can I send a score to somebody else's device?
Yes — choose Receive a score on theirs and send from yours. No email, no cable.
Does that go through the internet?
No. The score travels between the two devices and nowhere else.
Troubleshooting
Restore says there is nothing to restore.
The device is signed into a different Apple Account than the one that bought Folio Pro. Switch accounts in the App Store, then restore again.
Two devices cannot find each other.
Put both on the same Wi-Fi, or turn Bluetooth on for both, and have Folio open on each. If one is an older device, give it a moment — discovery is announced, not polled.
A score will not open.
Try it in another app. If it opens nowhere, the file is damaged; if it opens elsewhere and not here, send it to me — only if you have the right to share it — and I will look.
